Be sure to set your alarm for around 3 a.m. or earlier depending on which side of the island you are staying.  You will need to get up early, pack some winter clothes. Yes, it is very windy and cold at the top of the crater. Make yourself a thermos of coffee and add some tasty MochaTonix®.  This will energize you and get you ready for one of the most breath-taking experiences of your life.  Tune into the weather channel to find out if it is a good day for viewing.  It would be disappointing to know you got up that early and it was too cloudy to see the sunrise.  If you're not an early riser, get on the road before noon and the drive is still worth it.  It feels like you are standing on top of the world.  Depending on the time of year, you could see snow! On a very clear day, you can see the big Island of Hawaii from the peak.  More adventurous people can hike through the crater. (You have to sign a waiver saying you are ok with not being rescued in case the volcano decides to erupt while you are inside of it)  :)
